Three prongs do not always mean grounded
No Ground Behind The Outlet? A Full Rewire Is Not Always The Answer.
Two-prong outlets. Three-prong outlets with nothing behind them. A tester that says open ground. The fix can be a ground run to where it is needed, not a rewire. We look at yours and tell you which.

We look before we quote.
An outlet with no ground is a question about what is behind the wall. The answer is different in every house, and finding it is what we do.
What We Look At
- Whether a ground is already there. Many older homes carry a ground in the metal conduit or cable jacket, with no green wire to show for it. If it is there, grounding the outlets is a small job.
- Three prongs with nothing behind them. An outlet face with three holes is not a ground. At a Sacramento duplex, the outlets had three prongs and no ground behind them. The fix was a ground run under the house, not a rewire.
- Reverse polarity. Hot and neutral swapped at the outlet. Common in older houses, and one of the quickest things to put right.
- GFCI where there is no ground. Allowed, with the label that says so. It protects the person, not the equipment. We tell you when it is the right answer and when it is not.
Buying a house with ungrounded outlets? The inspector or insurer flagged them? We tell you what they need and what it costs, before any work begins.
My electric outlet in the garage wasn’t working in the garage and on the dawn to dusk light above the garage, Casey resolved the problem, did quality assurance to ensure all wires are okay… The staff at Priority One are great and Casey is very personable, patient and such a delightful person.Marian · Read on Google
